This class, led by Instructor Teri Thomas, is an introduction to basic carving techniques such as Sgraffito, Mishima and Relief Carving designs on leather-hard clay. Learn the different carving styles and pick the style of your choice to create a 6”x6” tile. Choose a design from the reference materials provided or create your own design pattern to carve.
Key Carving & Texturing Methods:
- Sgraffito: (Italian for "scratched") You apply colored slip (liquid clay) or underglaze to leather-hard clay, then scratch through the top layer to reveal the clay body underneath, creating lines and images.
- Mishima: Similar to sgraffito, but designs are carved, filled with a contrasting slip or underglaze, and then the surface wiped clean, leaving color only in the carved areas.
- Relief Carving: Carving away the background to make the design stand out (raised) from the surface.
This class is suited for all levels of experience.
